Tuesday 2nd October - Lesson

We will be looking at Factors, Multiples, Prime Numbers, Prime Decomposition, Highest Common Factor and Lowest Common Multiple.

Factor - An integer (whole number) that divides exactly into another number.

e.g. factors of 10 are 1, 2, 5, 10.

Multiples - A Multiple is a number in the times table of another number.

e.g. Multiples of 10 are 10, 20, 30, 40 etc.

Highest common factor - The biggest number which is a factor of both numbers.

Lowest common multiple - The number which is the first to appear in both times tables.

Product of primes - Write a number as a product of prime numbers.

e.g. 10 = 2 x 5, 100 = 2 x 2 x 5 x 5.

We can use primes to find HCF and LCM.

The HCF of 10 and 100 is 2 x 5 = 10 (product of their shared prime factors.
The LCM of 10 and 100 is 2 x 2 x 5 x 5 = 100 (product of all theor factors with shared factors only counted once).
